The knockdown textures are an early success of the orange and popcorn peel textures. It has remained to be the hit for most of the homeowners mainly due to its impressive practicality and appearances.  Usually, the look is mainly achieved by rolling the drywall, spraying, or troweling onto the ceilings and walls.  This then achieves the stalactite like peaks and then have this peaks flattened using the knockdown knives.

These mottled textures thus ass to the dimensional visual impact while also hiding the surface imperfections.  These also help in the muting of sounds.

Three Types of knockdown Texture

There are three types of the knockdown textures – mud trowel, stomp, and the splatter.  This has a distinct look and requires specific techniques and tools.

The stomp knockdown texture usually has a higher elevation of the surfaces compared to the mud trowel and the splatter. This is usually created by mixing the ready to mix drywall mud or the thinning pre-mixed with water and then applied on the ceilings or wall using the paint rollers.

The next thing that will follow is the stomping in the mud using the stiff-bristled crow’s foot brush.   Then to make the finishing, these mud is then flattened using the standard knockdown knife which leaves a finger-like texture on the surfaces.  This entire process takes longer times than the splatter.

This is one of the most popular knockdown texture that has a look of the Spanish lace stucco.  This texture is usually achieved by spraying the surfaces by the use of the drywall hopper gun that is usually loaded with either joint compound powder, pre-mixed wet drywall mud that is usually mixed with water.

The peaks that form during this process are then flattened using the knockdown knife making it able to achieve the low-profile raised textures. This application can be that messy especially during the spraying session.  More so, this technique needs a high initial setup but once you have all the necessities, then this whole process could be that uniform, less tiring, and quick.

Faux painting on a knockdown texture

By adding knockdown texture to any walls or ceilings could enhance their overall beauty.  However, buy just painting the wall with solid colors, this will really diminish the textured look. Therefore, one great way of bringing out this knockdown texture is by applying the color wash faux finish.  One of the ways in which you can do this is by using a brush to apply the colors to the wall and also washing the glaze into the walls.

However, before applying the brush on the wall, you will need to blot off any excessive glazes.  Once this glaze starts drying, you can then use a damp cloth to lightly wipe off the glaze.  The paint that will stay in the crevices will be that dark compared to the surfaces of the knockdown. This will cause the texture to become more pronounces.   But once this finish gets dry, then you can choose to add another color. More so, another way of adding a color wash to the walls or the ceiling could be by the use of a water rag and the steps mentioned above.  However, before using this technique, it is important to practice on the poster board first.  You can buy a small container of the texture spay used in touching up knock down walls and do a little demonstration.

Though this seems to be that heavy work, it is always worth it.  Most of the people will tend to skip this idea and go straight ahead faux painting on their walls, which is not always a good idea.  The reason being that you could dislike the final result necessitating the need for your painting over and over again on the wall with the base coat. It could be easier throwing away the poster board and retesting but the wall of your house it’s hard.

How to Apply Knockdown Texture

The knockdown textures can be applied either on the painted or bare drywalls as long as these surface blemishes are free.  Therefore, to have this surfaces prepared m, you can put on the protective gears and have the compound dried according to the instructions given on the manuals then have them sanded with the fine-grit sandpaper.

You can then secure the hopper on the drywall hopper gun, have the air hose and assembly attached on the air compressor. Finally, you can attach the spray nozzle gun that is most ideal for the knockdown textures.

When choosing the drywall joint compound for your knockdown technique, ensure you are choosing the one that dries too fast. you can then add the joint compound powder into a two-gallon bucket of plain cold water and have them mixed using the power drill until you achieve a mud that is lump-free.

The nest thing that you can do is scoping of a small amount of the mud using the small drywall knife and then tilting the knife to a 30-degree angle.  If the mud is able to slide with that ease than it has reached the proper consistency, and in the case, it does not, you can continuously add water while mixing and test again.

You can plug the air compressor into the grounded wall outlet and have the air valve open then turn on the compressor. You can then spray on a sheet of scrap drywall from at least 18 inches. While you are testing, then you need settling on a speed that provides the best texture weight that you need.   The rapid spray will always have that thinner and lighter texture while the slower you spray the more pronounced and heavier the texture will be.

The moment you have that preferred technique, you can then squeeze and trigger the drywall hopper gun thus splattering the intended ceiling or wall from a distance of about 18 inches away.

Knockdown texture application is not that easy and simple and the chances are that you cannot have this process done correctly unless you have some skills and experience.  Therefore, it is important to hire the services of certified professionals like Palm Beach Home and Remodeling Contractors to apply the new texture.  With these professionals, you can be sure of getting the best and quicker finish within less time.
